March 27, 2026Google has just made it far easier for people to move their AI conversations over to the Gemini app. With fresh import features now rolling out, users can pull in memories, preferences and full chat history from other AI tools so they do not lose context when they switch. The whole thing happens inside the app Settings page and takes only a few steps. 🤖
How the import process works
To bring over memories, users copy a suggested prompt from Gemini into their current AI app, generate the response there, and then paste it back. For complete chat history, they simply upload a ZIP file exported from another provider. Once imported, Gemini quickly learns personal details and past interactions, so conversations continue without awkward restarts.
Google also renamed the old past chats section to memory. The change highlights the app ability to remember details across sessions rather than treat each exchange as brand new. The imports started rolling out on March 26 2026 and work for personal accounts, though business, enterprise and users under 18 stay unsupported for now. Availability skips the EEA, UK and Switzerland at launch.
A direct quote from the announcement puts it plainly. Moving to Gemini just got incredibly simple. The goal sits in letting people pick up right where they left off.
Context around the bigger Assistant to Gemini shift
This memory import lands while Google keeps pushing its longer term plan to replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones and tablets. The company first aimed to finish the upgrade by the end of 2025 but later extended the timeline into 2026 to ensure a smoother handoff. Reports from 9to5Google and The Verge tracked that delay, noting that full retirement of Assistant will happen sometime this year on most devices running Android 10 or newer.
The import tools address a real pain point for anyone hesitant about switching. They reduce the friction that often keeps users stuck with familiar but less capable assistants. Coverage in TechCrunch points out how such features help Gemini feel more personal from day one.
Why this matters for everyday AI users
Many people already juggle several AI chat tools and hate rebuilding context each time they try something new. Google move lowers that barrier and positions Gemini as the easier default option. It also ties into wider efforts to connect the app more deeply with Google services for smarter, context aware help.
Developers and power users interested in similar memory or personalization features can explore AI chat platforms, AI memory tools, personal AI assistants or AI data migration solutions.
The update feels like a practical step rather than flashy hype. It simply removes one reason to stick with the old setup.
As the Assistant transition rolls forward through 2026, will more users take the leap now that their history travels with them?
