Mistral acquires Austria’s Emmi AI to strengthen industrial focus

France’s Mistral has acquired Austrian AI startup Emmi AI in a move to expand its presence in industrial and manufacturing sectors across Europe. The acquisition, announced for an undisclosed sum, marks Mistral’s second major purchase as the company builds its position as a European alternative to US AI giants like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Emmi AI, founded in 2024, builds specialized AI models that help industrial companies accelerate engineering workflows and product design cycles. The startup raised Austria’s largest-ever seed round last year, securing €15 million from investors including 3VC, Speedinvest, Serena, and PUSH VC.

The acquisition reflects a broader trend of AI companies moving beyond general-purpose chatbots to tackle specific industrial challenges. Emmi AI focuses on complex engineering problems like computational fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, and material stress testing – areas critical to aerospace, automotive, energy, and semiconductor companies. These applications represent a more specialized but potentially more valuable market than consumer AI tools.

For Mistral, the deal strengthens its appeal to European industrial enterprises that may prefer working with a regional AI provider over American competitors. The company has been positioning itself as the European champion in large language models, though it still trails far behind OpenAI and Google in terms of model performance and market reach.

Emmi AI’s team of more than 30 researchers and engineers will join Mistral’s Science and Applied AI divisions later this year. The acquisition also expands Mistral’s geographic footprint, with plans to hire additional talent in Austria, Germany, and Lithuania where Emmi’s team is based.

“This strategic acquisition cements Mistral’s leadership in industrial AI and positions us as the partner of choice for manufacturers in high-stakes sectors like aerospace, automotive, or semiconductors,” said Arthur Mensch, Mistral’s co-founder and CEO. The company says the integration will create a “fully integrated platform” for solving complex industrial challenges.

The move follows Mistral’s earlier acquisition of French AI startup Koyeb, showing the company’s commitment to growth through strategic purchases rather than just organic development. This approach allows Mistral to quickly add specialized capabilities and talent that would take years to build internally.

Johannes Brandstetter, Emmi AI’s co-founder and chief science officer, highlighted the startup’s work on “high-stakes physical challenges, ranging from the real-time stabilization of power grids to the intricate simulation of injection molding and automotive safety testing.” These applications demonstrate how AI is moving into mission-critical industrial processes where accuracy and reliability are essential.
