An infinitely generated text adventure powered by deep learning
AI Dungeon is a text-based adventure-story game you direct (and star in) while the AI brings it to life.
Unlike most games where you experience worlds created by game designers, with AI Dungeon – you can direct the AI to create worlds, characters, and scenarios for your character to interact with.
For instance, you could lead an army fighting back an alien invasion or be a mythical detective investigating the attempted assassination of the fairy queen.
The game uses a type of artificial intelligence called neural network to mathematically analyze the text you put in, then generate text that is likely to follow. Basically, the AI “reads” the last part of your story and tries to guess the next possible set of words — generating the story and results of your actions as you play in endless virtual worlds.
You can start a new game using the “Play” button and choose a setting, character, and name, then watch as the AI fills in details for your Adventure. Or, you can pick from hundreds of community-published, predefined Scenarios to start your Adventure. The Discover section is a great place to explore and find content you want to play.
AI Dungeon works on any device from a web browser and also offers dedicated mobile apps for playing on the go. It’s a neat game that could keep you occupied forever. You can start playing it for free, but there are also paid plans offering more credits and a few additional bells and whistles. Check it out.
What are the key features?
⭐
- Choose your adventure: You can start a new game using the "Play" button and choose a setting, character, and name, then watch as the AI fills in the details for your Adventure. Or, you can pick from hundreds of community-published, predefined Scenarios to start your Adventure. The Discover section is a great place to explore and find the content you want to play.
- Take a turn: This is a roleplay experience, so Take a Turn gives your character Do or Say actions. Or, write your own text with Story to move the plot along how you want. Anything you can type, you can do - the AI will kick in then, generating responses from your inputs and can advance the story to introduce characters, world events, and other elements for you to interact with during gameplay.
- Make it yours: Use Undo, Redo, Retry, and Edit to control the action. Also, there are Plot Components and Story Cards to keep the AI coherent and consistent. You're in charge.
- Anything is possible: You can type any action you think of, and the AI will try to generate a story off of your inputs. It's not always perfect, but you'll be surprised at what's possible.
- AI is hard: This is a game unlike anything you've ever played before. It relies on cutting-edge AI to generate responses. That being said, there may be weird quirks that you'll notice. The team is always working on improving AI and keeping up with research, so AI Dungeon will get better as new AI advancements come out.
Who is it for?
🤔
AI Dungeon brings text-based adventure to the 21st century. Back in the 1980s, these sorts of games were extremely popular, as computers of that age had limited graphical capabilities. In that sense, AI Dungeon will find its audience among those folks who spent countless hours playing such adventures. This time round, the AI will make those games even more complicated and unpredictable. In fact, the AI Dungeon team claims its game has infinite possibilities, with its AI algorithm constantly learning and predicting the next steps to make. It's a fun game that could easily take most of your time. Still, it's worth trying out if you're into text-based adventures.
