Apple to let users choose rival AI models across iOS 27 features

Apple is preparing to give users unprecedented choice in AI services, allowing them to select from multiple third-party artificial intelligence models to power features across its software ecosystem. The move marks a significant shift for the traditionally closed-platform company toward embracing external AI providers.

Users will be able to choose from various outside AI services for tasks like generating and editing text and images, according to Bloomberg. The feature is planned for iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, which are expected to launch this fall.

This development represents Apple’s continued evolution from a company that strictly controls every aspect of its user experience to one that recognizes the competitive landscape of AI requires collaboration. The decision comes as tech giants race to integrate AI capabilities into their products, with companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with language models and generative AI.

The timing is particularly significant as Apple faces growing pressure to keep pace with AI innovation. While the company has traditionally preferred to develop technologies in-house, the rapid advancement of AI models from companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and others has created a situation where partnering may be more strategic than trying to match every capability internally.

For users, this change could mean access to specialized AI models that excel in different areas. Some models might be better at creative writing, while others could be more accurate for technical tasks or image generation. This flexibility could give iPhone, iPad, and Mac users access to cutting-edge AI capabilities without forcing Apple to build everything from scratch.

The move also reflects broader industry trends toward AI model interoperability and choice. As AI becomes more central to computing experiences, users increasingly expect to have options rather than being locked into a single provider’s approach to artificial intelligence.

Apple’s strategy appears focused on making its devices the premier platform for AI experiences, regardless of which company’s models power those experiences. This approach could help the company maintain its hardware sales momentum while participating in the AI revolution without necessarily winning every aspect of the AI development race.
