The return did not happen because Meta had a change of heart. The European Commission issued an interim order forcing Meta to reopen WhatsApp’s Business API to third-party AI assistants. This matters beyond just one chatbot returning to one messaging app. The case is part of a broader pattern where the EU is using competition law to stop dominant platforms from favoring their own services while blocking rivals. WhatsApp has over two billion users worldwide, and Meta’s own AI assistant is built into the app. Locking out competing AI tools while promoting your own is exactly the kind of behavior European regulators have been scrutinizing for years.
