China Telecom has launched nationwide trial AI token subscription plans, marking a significant shift in how telecom operators approach their business models. The company is moving away from traditional data traffic sales toward offering computing power services directly to consumers and businesses.

This move represents a broader transformation in China’s telecommunications industry as operators seek new revenue streams in the rapidly growing AI market. With China investing heavily in AI infrastructure and large language models, telecom companies are positioning themselves as essential service providers for AI computing needs.

The subscription packages are structured in two main categories. For developers and small businesses, China Telecom offers three tiers:

  • Basic plan: 39.9 yuan ($5.50) monthly for 15 million tokens
  • Mid-tier plan: Pricing between basic and premium options
  • Premium plan: 299.9 yuan ($41.50) monthly for 150 million tokens

Individual and household users get more affordable options:

  • Entry plan: 9.9 yuan ($1.40) monthly for 10 million tokens
  • Top-tier plan: 49.9 yuan ($6.90) monthly for 80 million tokens

Tokens function as the basic units for processing text, images, and commands in generative AI systems. They essentially measure how much AI computing power users consume when interacting with AI models and services.

The pricing strategy reflects China Telecom’s attempt to make AI computing accessible to a broad range of users while creating sustainable revenue from the growing demand for AI services. By offering different tiers for business and personal use, the company acknowledges the varying needs and budgets of different user segments.

This launch comes as Chinese tech companies and consumers increasingly rely on AI tools for everything from content creation to business automation. The timing aligns with China’s national push to become a global leader in artificial intelligence technology and infrastructure.

Other Chinese telecom operators will likely follow suit with similar offerings, as the industry recognizes that AI computing services represent a major growth opportunity beyond traditional telecommunications services.
