China’s DeepSeek slashes AI model prices by 75% in aggressive market push

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is making an aggressive pricing move to capture developer market share, offering a massive 75% discount on its newly launched DeepSeek-V4-Pro model through May 5. The company is also slashing prices for input cache hits across its entire API lineup to just one-tenth of the original cost.

The dramatic price cuts come as DeepSeek positions itself as a serious competitor in the global AI market, particularly targeting developers who need powerful models for complex AI agent applications. These agents can handle more sophisticated tasks than basic chatbots but demand significantly more computing resources.

DeepSeek introduced its V4 model preview on Friday, marking a significant development in the Chinese AI landscape. The model has been specifically adapted to work with Huawei’s chip technology, addressing the ongoing semiconductor restrictions that have pushed Chinese companies to develop domestic alternatives to Western hardware.

The V4 series comes in two distinct versions designed for different use cases:

  • DeepSeek-V4-Pro: The more powerful variant with higher pricing (now discounted)
  • DeepSeek-V4-Flash: A lighter, more affordable option for basic applications

According to DeepSeek’s internal benchmarks, the Pro version outperforms other open-source AI models in world-knowledge tests, trailing only Google’s proprietary Gemini-Pro-3.1. This performance claim, if validated by independent testing, would place DeepSeek among the top tier of publicly available AI models.

The pricing strategy reflects the intense competition in the AI market, where companies are racing to build developer ecosystems around their platforms. By offering steep discounts, DeepSeek appears to be following the playbook of many tech companies that prioritize market share over immediate profits during growth phases.

The focus on AI agent capabilities is particularly noteworthy, as this represents one of the fastest-growing segments in artificial intelligence. Unlike simple chatbots that respond to queries, AI agents can perform complex, multi-step tasks autonomously, making them valuable for business automation and specialized applications.

DeepSeek’s adaptation to Huawei chip technology also highlights how Chinese AI companies are navigating the complex geopolitical landscape around semiconductor access, developing solutions that work with domestically available hardware rather than relying on restricted foreign components.
