Google’s vision of smart glasses is finally becoming reality. The tech giant has announced intelligent eyewear that will launch this fall, bringing AI-powered assistance directly to your face without the need to pull out your phone.

This marks a significant step forward in wearable computing, where previous attempts by companies like Google Glass failed to gain mainstream adoption. The new approach focuses on practicality and style, addressing the key barriers that prevented earlier smart glasses from succeeding.

Two types of smart glasses planned

Google is developing two categories of intelligent eyewear through its Android XR platform, built in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm. Audio glasses will launch first this fall, offering spoken assistance through built-in speakers. Display glasses will follow later, showing visual information directly in your field of view.

Both types integrate with Gemini AI and work with Android and iOS devices, ensuring broad compatibility across smartphone platforms.

Fashion-forward design partnerships

Learning from past failures, Google has partnered with established eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to create stylish frames people will actually want to wear. The company previewed initial designs that will be part of full collections from both brands.

This partnership approach mirrors successful strategies in the smartwatch market, where tech companies collaborate with fashion brands to create devices that blend technology with style.

Hands-free AI assistance

The audio glasses activate with a “Hey Google” voice command or by tapping the frame. Once activated, Gemini AI can handle various tasks:

  • Visual recognition: Ask about restaurants, landmarks, or confusing signs you’re looking at
  • Navigation: Get turn-by-turn directions with the glasses knowing your exact position and orientation
  • Communication: Send texts, manage calls, and hear message summaries without touching your phone
  • Photography: Capture photos and videos with voice commands, then edit them using AI tools
  • Translation: Hear real-time translations of speech and text with voice matching technology
  • App integration: Control apps like Uber, DoorDash, and Mondly through voice commands

The broader smart glasses market

Google’s entry comes as the smart glasses market is heating up. Meta has found success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, while Apple is reportedly working on similar technology. The focus on audio-first functionality represents a more practical approach than previous attempts at augmented reality displays.

The timing also coincides with major advances in AI capabilities, making voice-controlled assistants more useful and reliable than when Google Glass first launched over a decade ago. If successful, these glasses could represent the next major category in personal computing after smartphones and smartwatches.
