Contrails, those thin white streaks planes leave across the sky, are responsible for roughly one third of aviation’s total climate impact. Not carbon. Not fuel burn. Contrails. And until recently, almost nobody in the industry was doing anything serious about it at scale. That’s starting to change.
Google has announced Operation Blue Skies, a 30-month program it describes as the world’s first state-backed trial to avoid contrails across an entire oceanic airspace. The program focuses on Shanwick airspace, the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor, which alone accounts for approximately 5% of global contrail warming. That’s a meaningful slice of a meaningful problem.
How it actually works
Contrails form when water vapor in jet exhaust condenses around soot particles in cold, humid air. Not every flight creates warming contrails, and not every contrail persists long enough to matter climatically. The key insight from Google’s earlier research is that AI can predict which specific flight paths will produce the worst warming contrails, and pilots can then make small adjustments to avoid those regions entirely.
During the trial, around 10,000 flights per year will pass through Shanwick airspace during trial hours. A small percentage of those, the ones that would otherwise cut through contrail-sensitive zones, will be slightly rerouted. The changes are designed to stay within normal flight operations, so this isn’t asking airlines to add significant fuel burn or delay passengers.
Google’s role is building the AI models that predict contrail formation and using machine learning combined with satellite imaging to verify whether the avoidance actually worked. That last part matters. Independent verification is what separates a credible climate program from greenwashing.
Who’s involved and how it’s funded
This isn’t a solo Google project. The consortium behind Operation Blue Skies includes:
- NATS, the UK’s primary air navigation service provider, handling airspace operations and air traffic control coordination
- Contrails.org, leading forecast assessments and trial design
- Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge, providing independent evaluation of climate outcomes
- Met Office, developing a dedicated UK contrail forecast capability
The program is co-funded by industry partners and the UK Department for Transport through the ATI Programme, a collaboration between the Aerospace Technology Institute, the Department for Business Innovation Science and Trade, and Innovate UK. All government grant money goes directly to academic, non-profit, and aviation partners. Google is participating pro-bono, contributing £1.4 million in-kind through AI research, engineering, and computing infrastructure.
Why this matters beyond the UK
Google has been building toward this for a while. Its earlier work with American Airlines and EUROCONTROL’s MUAC demonstrated that contrail avoidance is scientifically valid and operationally workable at the individual airline level. Operation Blue Skies is the logical next step: proving it works when you coordinate across an entire airspace, not just one carrier’s fleet.
That’s the harder problem. Individual airline trials are relatively simple to manage. Coordinating reroutes across hundreds of flights from different carriers, through shared airspace, with air traffic controllers making real-time decisions, is a different challenge entirely. If this trial produces clean results, it becomes a usable blueprint for other airspace authorities.
For the wider AI and climate tech sector, this is also a useful model for how large tech companies can contribute to hard infrastructure problems without owning the outcome. Google brings the AI. Government brings legitimacy and funding structure. Academic partners provide independent verification. Aviation operators bring operational knowledge. None of them could run this alone. So far, that structure looks like one of the more credible frameworks for applying AI to climate at any meaningful scale.
