MediaTek just pulled one of the oldest tricks in the semiconductor playbook: take a chip from last year, give it new software features, and release it under a name that implies it belongs to the current generation. The Dimensity 9600M, which Android Headlines reported this week, is built on a 3nm process, not the 2nm node used by the Dimensity 9600 Pro announced just days earlier. That detail is buried in the spec sheet, and most buyers will never find it.
At its core, the 9600M is essentially a repackaged Dimensity 9500. The CPU layout includes 1x ARM C1-Ultra at 4.21 GHz, 3x ARM C1-Premium, and 4x ARM C1-Pro cores, keeping the all-big-core design MediaTek has been pushing for a couple of years now. It supports LPDDR5X 10667 RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, so nothing unexpected there. The GPU is the ARM Mali-G1 Ultra MC12, capable of driving a WQHD+ display at up to 180Hz and supporting tri-port MIPI tri-fold display configurations, which matters as foldable form factors keep expanding.
Where MediaTek actually added value is on the AI side. The 9600M gets the same Agentic AI Engine and Dimensity Scheduling Engine found in the 9600 Pro, along with the NPU 990, which handles both generative and agentic AI workloads. That’s a real upgrade over the Dimensity 9500 in terms of on-device AI capability. The ISP also supports single sensors up to 320MP, 8K60 10-bit decoding across HEVC, AVC, VP9, and AV1, and 4K120 video recording with electronic image stabilization enabled. On paper, the camera and video specs are competitive with anything in the Android space right now.
The expected launch vehicles are the vivo X500 and OPPO Find X10, with their respective Pro Max variants confirmed to use the actual 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro. That split is intentional and not unusual. MediaTek has long relied on OPPO and vivo as its primary partners for flagship silicon, and those two brands typically tier their lineups to accommodate different chip grades. The problem is that buyers comparing the X500 and X500 Pro Max side-by-side will see “Dimensity 9600” in both spec sheets and assume they are getting the same generation of silicon. They are not.
This matters beyond just one product cycle. The broader trend here is MediaTek trying to grow its footprint in premium Android devices without forcing OEMs to absorb the cost of 2nm silicon across every model. That’s a legitimate strategy, and it mirrors what Qualcomm does with its “Plus” and standard Snapdragon variants. But Qualcomm is generally clearer about what separates those tiers. Calling a 3nm chip the 9600M and a 2nm chip the 9600 Pro, within the same product family launched in the same week, is going to create real confusion at retail and in review coverage.
For developers and product teams evaluating which devices to optimize for, the distinction matters. The 9600 Pro represents a meaningful architectural step forward. The 9600M is capable hardware, and the AI feature additions are not cosmetic, but it is not the same chip. Treating them as equivalent would be a mistake. MediaTek is betting that most consumers won’t look that closely. Based on how smartphone marketing typically works, they’re probably right.
