May 5, 2026Meta is expanding its AI-powered age detection technology to more countries as part of its ongoing effort to ensure teenagers receive age-appropriate protections on Instagram and Facebook. The company is adding visual analysis capabilities to its existing text-based detection methods while pushing for industry-wide changes to how age verification is handled online.
The expansion comes as social media platforms face increasing pressure from regulators and parents to better protect young users. Meta’s approach combines automated detection with human oversight to identify accounts that may belong to users under 18, even when they claim to be adults.
AI visual analysis joins text-based detection
Meta announced it’s adding visual analysis as a new technique to help identify underage accounts. This technology scans photos and videos for visual clues about a person’s age, looking at factors like height or bone structure to estimate general age ranges.
The company emphasizes this is not facial recognition technology. Instead, the AI analyzes general themes and visual patterns without identifying specific individuals. This visual analysis works alongside existing methods that scan profiles for contextual clues like:
- Birthday celebrations in posts or comments
- Mentions of school grades
- Age-related content in bios and captions
- Patterns across Instagram Reels, Instagram Live, and Facebook Groups
When the system flags an account as potentially underage, it gets deactivated. The account holder must then provide proof of age through Meta’s verification process to prevent permanent deletion.
Geographic expansion of teen protections
Meta is rolling out its proactive teen detection technology to 27 countries in the European Union and Brazil for Instagram users. The company says this expansion will automatically place millions more suspected teen accounts into Teen Account protections, even if users listed adult birthdays.
On Facebook, the technology is launching in the US for the first time, with plans to expand to the UK and EU by June. Meta aims for global Instagram coverage throughout 2025.
Teen Accounts include built-in safety features that:
- Limit who can contact teens directly
- Restrict the content teens can see
- Automatically apply age-appropriate content settings for users under 18
Enhanced reporting and parental involvement
The platform is simplifying its reporting process to make it easier for users to flag suspected underage accounts. Meta is also deploying AI models to review these reports alongside human moderators, which the company says delivers higher accuracy and faster response times.
For parents, Meta will begin sending notifications to US users on Facebook and Instagram with guidance on checking their teens’ ages and tips for discussing online safety. These resources are available globally through Meta’s Family Center.
Call for industry-wide solutions
While expanding its own technology, Meta argues that individual companies cannot solve age verification challenges alone. The company advocates for legislation requiring app stores to verify ages and share this information with apps and developers.
Meta cites survey data showing 88% of US parents support age verification at the app store level. This approach would create consistent standards across all apps rather than requiring each platform to develop separate age assurance systems with different rules and requirements.
The push for centralized age verification reflects broader industry discussions about how to balance user privacy with safety requirements as governments worldwide consider new regulations for social media platforms serving young users.
