OpenAI acquires presentation startup NextSlide to bolster ChatGPT’s creative output

OpenAI acquires presentation startup NextSlide to bolster ChatGPT’s creative output

OpenAI just bought a startup you’ve likely never heard of, and that’s exactly the point. According to TechCrunch, NextSlide, a tool built to convert prompts, notes, and documents into polished, editable presentations, has been absorbed into OpenAI, with its team now working directly on ChatGPT. The acquisition actually happened earlier this year. The public announcement came months later.

NextSlide’s founder, Ahmed Beshry, posted a note on LinkedIn confirming the deal, though financial terms were never disclosed. On the NextSlide website, Beshry described the product’s core promise as making visual communication more accessible, helping people turn rough ideas into something they can actually show someone. That framing maps directly onto one of ChatGPT’s most visible gaps: it can write, reason, and summarize, but producing presentation-ready output has always required a separate tool and a separate step.

That gap is exactly where competitors have been building. Google Slides has native AI integration through Gemini. Canva has leaned hard into AI generation. Microsoft’s Copilot is baked into PowerPoint. And then there are dedicated players like Gamma, Beautiful.ai, and Tome, all of which have raised real money specifically to own the AI-generated presentation space. OpenAI is late to this particular category, but acquiring a team that has already thought through the problem is faster than building from scratch.

Beshry’s background adds some credibility here. Before NextSlide, he co-founded Caper AI, a smart cart and cashier-less checkout startup that Instacart acquired in 2021. He has a track record of building products that get bought, and building them with teams that larger companies want to keep.

The broader signal is worth paying attention to. OpenAI has been expanding what ChatGPT can produce, not just text, but images, code, data analysis, and now, apparently, presentations. Each addition makes ChatGPT stickier for professional users who currently bounce between four or five tools to finish a single work task. Pulling presentation creation into the same interface is a direct shot at the productivity suite market that Microsoft and Google have dominated for decades.

So while this deal is small by acquisition standards, the direction it points is not. OpenAI is building toward something that looks less like a chatbot and more like a full creative workspace. NextSlide is one piece of that, but it fits a pattern that’s been building all year.
