Apple and OpenAI partnership heads toward legal battle after two-year alliance sours
May 15, 2026OpenAI is making its Codex coding assistant available on mobile devices for the first time. Starting today, all ChatGPT users can access their coding projects through the ChatGPT mobile app on iOS and Android, regardless of whether they use the free or paid tiers.
The move comes almost a year after Codex launched on Mac and Windows, and represents another step in OpenAI’s broader strategy to create a unified platform for its AI tools. It also puts the company in more direct competition with Anthropic’s Claude Code, which has offered mobile access since last fall.
The mobile integration doesn’t let users write code directly on their phones. Instead, the ChatGPT app acts as a remote control for Codex running on a separate machine, whether that’s a personal computer or a company server. OpenAI announced this approach keeps files and credentials secure on the original device while still allowing remote monitoring and control.
This setup offers some practical benefits for developers working on time-sensitive projects:
- Receive updates and screenshots while away from the main coding environment
- Send prompts and instructions to Codex from anywhere
- Get notified when the AI needs input to continue working
- Reduce project downtime by staying connected to ongoing tasks
OpenAI explains that Codex uses a secure relay system to maintain connections across devices without exposing machines to the public internet. The relay also syncs session data and context across all devices where users are signed into ChatGPT.
This release fits into OpenAI’s larger plans for a comprehensive desktop application. In March, the company confirmed it was developing a single app that would combine ChatGPT, Codex, and its Atlas web browser into one unified experience. Adding mobile access to these tools creates the foundation for a complete cross-platform ecosystem.
The timing also reflects growing competition in AI-powered development tools. Anthropic has already established mobile access as a key feature, and other companies are racing to offer developers more flexible ways to use AI assistants. OpenAI’s approach of maintaining security while enabling remote access could appeal to enterprise users who need both convenience and data protection.
To use the new feature, users need to update both the ChatGPT mobile app and the Codex desktop application on Mac. Windows support for the mobile connection is coming soon, though OpenAI hasn’t provided a specific timeline.
