The White House has announced more than $5 billion in federal funding for the Genesis Mission, a broad government initiative aimed at using artificial intelligence to speed up scientific discovery across health, energy, defense, and infrastructure. The announcement came during the Genesis Mission 2026 Summit on July 22, with Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, leading the rollout.
What started as a Department of Energy effort after President Trump’s November 2025 executive order has grown into a coordination effort spanning more than 15 federal agencies. The idea is straightforward: the federal government already holds enormous amounts of scientific data and computing infrastructure. The Genesis Mission is an attempt to connect those assets and put AI to work on problems that no single agency could tackle alone.
The initiative is built on the DOE-developed American Science and Security Platform, which gives researchers shared access to data, computing resources, and AI tools. The DOE selected 278 projects through a competitive application process, and officials say the volume and quality of proposals they received signals strong demand from the scientific community for this kind of infrastructure.
The Genesis Mission is organized around a set of National Science and Technology Challenges, grouped into five broad areas. Here is what each area covers:
- Health: Finding the root causes of chronic disease, unlocking cures for pediatric cancer, accelerating drug discovery, and improving health outcomes for veterans through AI analysis of electronic health records and genomic data.
- Energy and infrastructure: Building digital twins of physical infrastructure, improving power grid management, and mapping America’s natural resources including critical minerals and water systems.
- Industrial strength: Restoring American leadership in semiconductor manufacturing, scaling up biological production of fuels and materials, and compressing the design and certification timelines for conventional and nuclear weapons components.
- Scientific discovery: Analyzing more than 150 petabytes of NASA space data, building self-driving autonomous laboratories, advancing quantum computing toward practical use, and developing AI models that can predict the behavior of living systems.
- National security: Early detection of biological threats, faster materials qualification for the nuclear security enterprise, and AI-assisted attribution of nuclear signatures.
The scale of the effort reflects a broader shift in how governments think about scientific research. For decades, major breakthroughs came from long-term, discipline-specific investment. The Genesis Mission bets on a different model: pool existing data assets, apply AI at scale, and chase results across multiple fields at once. The comparison officials are reaching for is the kind of national mobilization that produced the Manhattan Project or the Apollo program, though the mechanism here is coordination and software rather than physical construction.
Whether that comparison holds up will depend on execution. Federal interagency collaboration has a long history of friction, and connecting data systems across agencies with different security requirements, data standards, and institutional cultures is genuinely hard. The American Science and Security Platform is supposed to solve some of that by providing shared infrastructure, but integrating 15-plus agencies around common research workflows is a significant management challenge.
The health-focused challenges are likely to draw the most public attention. The initiative would give researchers AI-assisted access to national longitudinal health data, pediatric cancer datasets, and the Million Veteran Program’s genomic records, with DOE supercomputing handling the heavy computation. NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya said the goal is to cut the time it takes for research findings to reach patients, while maintaining scientific rigor.
On the defense side, the Genesis Mission includes efforts to accelerate weapons component design and certification, a priority for the Department of War and the National Nuclear Security Administration. These projects aim to use AI-assisted modeling to compress timelines that currently take years, which has direct implications for how quickly the U.S. can modernize its nuclear arsenal and respond to emerging threats.
The White House says today’s announcement is not the final word. Additional announcements covering private sector participation, philanthropy, and international engagement are expected. The Genesis Mission also ties into a broader report published by Kratsios called “Science: A New Golden Age,” which outlines the administration’s vision for doubling U.S. research and development output and turning scientific breakthroughs into practical benefits more quickly.
For researchers, the most concrete near-term opportunity is access to the infrastructure and funding that comes with the National Science and Technology Challenges. The strong response to the initial application process, officials say, points to appetite for even more investment in future rounds.
