GitHub had a six-hour worldwide outage on the same day Cursor launched its new code-hosting platform. That timing is either a remarkable coincidence or the most effective product launch setup in recent memory. Either way, Cursor is capitalizing.
The AI coding company, now officially part of SpaceX, introduced Origin this week. It’s a direct shot at GitHub’s core product: a platform where developers can store code in repositories, collaborate on codebases, browse and edit files, and manage pull requests. Everything GitHub does, Origin is built to do. And Cursor is betting that enough developers are fed up to give it a real look.
This is a logical extension of what Cursor already does. Its AI Code Editor has been its flagship product, focused on automating and accelerating web development. Origin takes that further by giving Cursor control over where the code actually lives, not just how it gets written. The company has also said that “agent native” features are coming to Origin, though specifics are sparse for now. A broader app ecosystem to support coding workflows within Origin is also in the works.
One thing worth highlighting: Origin is not asking developers to abandon GitHub cold turkey. The platform is designed to work alongside GitHub, letting teams sync repositories between the two and pass code back and forth. “Your GitHub repos can sit alongside the ones Cursor hosts,” the company writes in its blog. “Connect GitHub to Cursor, pick your org, and you’ll see the repos you can sync. Select one and Cursor pulls it in.” That interoperability lowers the barrier to trying Origin significantly. Developers don’t have to make an all-or-nothing decision on day one.
The frustration driving interest in alternatives is real. GitHub has logged 257 outages over the past year, according to a recent analysis by LeadDev, whose reporter Charles Humble noted a “visible exodus of high-profile users” as a result. Earlier this year, GitHub rolled out a set of commitments to address availability concerns after a string of incidents. The outage on Origin’s launch day, which saw error rates hit nearly 20% globally for over six hours, was a sharp reminder that those problems haven’t gone away.
Still, competing with GitHub is not a small task. The platform has around 180 million developers using it as of last October, according to GitHub’s own figures. It was founded in 2007, acquired by Microsoft in 2018, and remains the largest source-code host in the world by a significant margin. Network effects in developer tooling are strong. Developers go where the code is, and right now, most of the world’s code is on GitHub.
But Cursor has a few things working in its favor. It already has a large, engaged user base of developers who are paying for its AI editor. Origin gives those users a reason to consolidate more of their workflow inside Cursor’s ecosystem. And if the “agent native” features it’s teasing are meaningfully better than what GitHub offers through Copilot and its own automation tools, that could be a real differentiator rather than just a catch-up play.
The bigger picture here is that AI coding tools are no longer just about writing code faster. They’re starting to absorb the surrounding infrastructure: hosting, review, deployment. Cursor entering code hosting puts it in direct competition not just with GitHub, but with the broader Microsoft developer stack. That’s an ambitious position for a startup, even one backed by Elon Musk’s orbit. Whether Origin becomes a genuine alternative or stays a useful complement to GitHub depends entirely on whether Cursor can execute on those agent-native promises and keep its own platform stable while GitHub stumbles.
