Firefox and Exa are betting that AI search doesn’t have to be a closed loop

Most browser makers are building vertically right now. One company owns the browser, the search index, the AI model, and the surrounding services. Firefox is going the opposite direction. Mozilla has announced a partnership with Exa.ai, a search and retrieval company designed for AI-era queries, and the goal is clear: keep the stack open and keep the user in control.

This isn’t a minor feature drop. It signals how Mozilla plans to compete in a market where Google, Microsoft, and Apple all have deeply integrated AI pipelines. Firefox doesn’t have that kind of infrastructure. But rather than build a closed system from scratch, Mozilla is choosing partners that share its values on privacy and transparency. Exa is the first of those.

What Exa actually does inside Firefox

Exa will power two specific features: Smart Window on desktop and Quick Answers on iOS. Both are designed to surface current, source-backed answers without pulling the user away from whatever page they’re on. The key detail here is citation visibility. Sources aren’t buried in a secondary menu. They’re right there, visible at a glance, so users can judge the answer themselves rather than just accepting it.

That’s a real design decision, not marketing language. It’s the difference between an AI that summarizes and moves on and one that actually shows its work. And it matters for publishers too, who often disappear entirely when AI systems collapse their content into a single clean response.

Why the partnership model matters competitively

Exa’s CEO Will Bryk put it plainly: search built for the AI era doesn’t work if it’s locked inside one company’s stack. That’s the argument Firefox is building its AI strategy around. Instead of replicating what Google or Microsoft are doing, Mozilla is positioning Firefox as a neutral layer that connects users to specialized tools without locking them in.

The practical benefits of this approach include:

  • No single vendor controlling both the model and the browser interface
  • Zero data retention commitment tied to AI queries
  • Users able to swap or choose AI systems rather than accepting defaults
  • Source citations surfaced by design, not as an opt-in feature

Ajit Varma, Head of Firefox, described the philosophy as straightforward: AI should be transparent, under user control, and not an all-or-nothing offering. That’s a direct contrast to how most competitors are shipping AI right now.

What this means going forward

Mozilla has been explicit that Exa won’t be the only partnership of this kind. The model is to bring in specialists for specific functions rather than build everything in-house. So Firefox stays focused on the browser layer while partners like Exa handle retrieval, and presumably other partners handle other pieces.

For developers and product teams evaluating AI browser tools, the question is whether this approach can actually keep pace with vertically integrated competitors. The open model is more flexible, but it also requires coordination across companies. Still, for users who distrust single-vendor AI stacks, Firefox is carving out a real alternative.
