Autonomous AI agents have been a talking point for two years. Google is now putting one inside your browser. Gemini Spark, the company’s higher-tier agentic product, just got direct Chrome integration, letting it log into sites using your saved credentials and complete multi-step tasks without you clicking through every screen. Google announced the update alongside a significant expansion of Spark’s availability to Google AI Pro subscribers in over 160 additional countries.
The Chrome browsing feature is the more interesting story here. Spark can now do things like search apartment listings you’ve already saved, schedule viewings, or start a flight booking based on options it researches. That’s a meaningful step beyond what most AI assistants do today, which is summarize or suggest rather than actually execute. Google is careful to note that sensitive actions, specifically payments, get handed back to the user rather than completed autonomously. There are also protections against prompt injection, a real attack vector where malicious web content tries to hijack an agent mid-task.
This puts Google in direct competition with Operator from OpenAI, which launched earlier this year with similar browser-control ambitions, and with Anthropic’s Computer Use feature built into Claude. Microsoft is also pushing in this direction through Copilot and its integration with Edge. The difference with Spark’s Chrome integration is the use of your existing logged-in sessions and saved passwords, which reduces friction significantly. That’s convenient, and it’s also what makes the security architecture worth paying attention to.
The broader context matters here. The AI industry has been moving from chat interfaces to agents that can actually do things, and the browser is the obvious battleground because so much of daily digital work happens there. Shopping, booking, form submission, research workflows, all of it lives in tabs. Whichever AI product earns user trust for handling those tasks stands to become deeply embedded in daily routines, which is exactly what Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic are competing for.
