Google is making its artificial intelligence tools more accessible by slashing the price of its AI Plus subscription plan. The company announced the plan will now cost $5 per month, down from the original $8 monthly fee. The subscription also gets double the storage space, jumping from 200GB to 400GB.
The price cut signals Google’s aggressive push to compete in the rapidly expanding AI subscription market. As companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic battle for users, pricing has become a key battlefield. Lower prices could help Google attract users who have been hesitant to pay premium rates for AI features.
The AI Plus plan launched in January 2026 as a budget-friendly way to access Google’s Gemini 3 Pro model, Nano Banana Pro, and Deep Research features. These tools were previously only available through Google’s more expensive AI Pro plan, but Plus offered them with stricter usage limits to keep costs down.
Google has sweetened the deal with several new features that reflect the company’s broader AI strategy:
- AI-powered email tools for managing inbox tasks
- Daily Brief agent that summarizes your upcoming day in the Gemini app
- Access to Gemini Omni, Google’s newest AI model for generating video content from any type of input
The timing of this announcement, coming after Google I/O 2026, suggests the company is using its annual developer conference momentum to drive subscription growth. Google faces intense competition from Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, both of which have gained significant traction in the consumer AI market.
The storage increase is particularly notable since cloud storage has become a major revenue driver for tech companies. By doubling storage while cutting prices, Google is essentially betting that increased user engagement and adoption will offset the reduced per-user revenue.
According to Vikas Kansal, Google’s Product Lead for Gemini AI subscriptions, existing subscribers will see their extra storage space within the next few days. The new pricing will appear on their next billing cycle. New users can sign up for the updated AI Plus plan immediately through Google’s website.
The move reflects broader industry trends where AI companies are experimenting with different pricing models to find the sweet spot between accessibility and profitability. As AI tools become more mainstream, companies are discovering that lower prices can drive higher adoption rates, potentially leading to greater long-term revenue through increased usage and upselling opportunities.
