MediaTek’s Dimensity 8550 brings Google’s Gemini Intelligence to affordable Android phones

MediaTek has announced its new Dimensity 8550 chipset, a targeted update designed to bring Google’s Gemini Intelligence features to more affordable Android devices. While the chip represents a minor upgrade in most areas, its support for Gemini Nano V3 makes it significant for the future of AI on Android.

This announcement comes as Google pushes Gemini Intelligence as the next major evolution for Android. The AI layer promises to deliver advanced features that go beyond current smartphone capabilities, including new UI widgets and enhanced Gboard functionality. However, these features have strict hardware requirements that have limited their availability to premium devices.

The Dimensity 8550 targets the “flagship killer” segment – phones that offer high-end features at mid-range prices. MediaTek says the chip is “powered by MediaTek’s powerful NPU 880 and an ever-growing generative AI ecosystem,” with the new chipset including “an LLM Booster and support for the latest Google Gemini Nano V3.”

The chip appears to be primarily an AI-focused upgrade over the Dimensity 8500, which MediaTek introduced earlier this year. Both chips share the same 1+3+4 core configuration using Cortex-A725 cores in an “All Big Core” CPU setup. The main difference lies in the upgraded neural processing unit (NPU) that enables Gemini Nano V3 support.

For devices to actually run Gemini Intelligence, they need more than just the right chipset. Google’s requirements also include:

  • 12GB of RAM
  • Regular Android update support
  • Gemini Nano V3 compatibility

This development matters because it could significantly expand the number of Android devices capable of running Google’s most advanced AI features. Previously, these capabilities were limited to flagship phones with the most powerful processors. By bringing support to more affordable devices, MediaTek and Google are making advanced AI accessible to a broader range of users.

Current devices using the Dimensity 8500 include the Motorola Edge 70 Pro, Xiaomi 17T, and Poco X8 Pro. We can expect to see phones with the Dimensity 8550 from similar manufacturers targeting the competitive mid-range market, where AI capabilities are becoming increasingly important for differentiation.

The timing also reflects the broader industry trend toward AI-enabled smartphones. As companies like Apple, Samsung, and Google make AI features central to their marketing strategies, chipset makers like MediaTek are responding by ensuring their processors can handle these demanding workloads across different price points.
