Meta is making a major push to transform WhatsApp from a simple messaging app into a comprehensive business tool. The company announced Wednesday that its AI-powered customer support bot, now called Meta Business Agent, is available globally within WhatsApp and Instagram DMs.
This launch represents nearly two years of testing in markets like India and Mexico. For Meta, it’s a critical step toward diversifying WhatsApp’s revenue beyond traditional messaging fees and click-to-WhatsApp advertising. The move also reflects the broader industry trend of companies racing to embed AI into their core products to create new revenue streams.
The Meta Business Agent can handle a wide range of customer service tasks that previously required human staff. These include answering customer questions, recommending products, booking appointments, and qualifying sales leads. When the AI can’t handle a query, it can route customers to human representatives.
Meta is testing several advanced features with select accounts across WhatsApp Business, Instagram Pro, Messenger, and Meta Business Suite. One feature provides daily briefings of overnight chat activity along with insights. The company is also working on capabilities like market research, product feature highlighting, and calendar management.
The bigger picture includes plans to connect the agent with third-party tools for competitive insights. Meta wants the agent to surface relevant businesses in search results and share contact details in chats. Perhaps most significantly, the company is building a platform that will let large enterprises create custom agents that integrate with systems like:
- Shopify for e-commerce
- Zendesk for customer service
- Shopee for marketplace operations
Meta plans to monetize this service by including the AI agent in premium tiers of its WhatsApp Business subscription. Large businesses will pay based on token usage, similar to how other AI services charge for API calls.
This pricing model is essential for WhatsApp’s business strategy. The messaging platform has historically relied on businesses paying for messaging services and advertising. Adding AI-powered workflow capabilities could significantly expand that revenue base, especially as small and medium businesses increasingly look for integrated solutions that combine communication with business operations.
The global rollout puts Meta in direct competition with other business messaging platforms and customer service tools. By embedding AI directly into WhatsApp, Meta is betting that businesses will prefer an all-in-one solution over managing separate tools for messaging, customer service, and workflow management.
