Nvidia already owns the hardware layer of AI. Now it wants the software community too. Jensen Huang has announced that Nvidia is acquiring Hugging Face in a deal valued at $12.93 billion, a move that would put the company in a position no AI player has occupied before: dominant in both the silicon that powers AI workloads and the open platform where millions of developers actually build with it.
Hugging Face is, in the simplest terms, GitHub for AI. It’s where developers share, discover, and test open-source models. The platform took off during the generative AI boom of 2022 and hasn’t slowed down since. It now claims over 18 million users, three million models, and more than 200,000 companies pulling from its repositories to build real products. That’s not a niche community. That’s the backbone of the open AI ecosystem.
Huang has said Hugging Face will “remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem” and that users won’t be pushed toward Nvidia products. He pointed to a letter he recently published supporting open-source AI, and noted that Nvidia already contributes over 500 models and 250 datasets to the platform. Nvidia was also already a financial backer, having invested in at least one funding round in 2023 alongside Google, Amazon, Salesforce, AMD, Intel, IBM, and Qualcomm.
So why does this matter beyond the headline number? The acquisition signals where Nvidia thinks the next competitive battleground is. Selling GPUs is extraordinarily profitable right now, but hardware margins don’t last forever. Owning the community platform where developers discover and deploy models creates a different kind of lock-in, one that’s harder for AMD, Intel, or a future competitor to chip away at.
There’s also a broader strategic context here. Open-source AI is gaining serious credibility. Models like Meta’s Llama series have shown that open weights can rival proprietary systems on many benchmarks. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue said earlier this month that China is winning the AI race partly because of its embrace of open models. Nvidia buying the central hub for that open ecosystem is a direct response to that trend.
The deal still needs regulatory approval, and that’s not a small caveat. Antitrust scrutiny of AI-adjacent acquisitions has intensified across both the US and EU. A company that controls AI chips acquiring the dominant open model repository will attract real attention from regulators who are already watching Nvidia closely. Whether the deal closes as structured is an open question. But the intent is clear: Nvidia wants to own the full stack.
