Anthropic beat OpenAI to Linux by about a month. That’s not a knock on the ChatGPT maker exactly, but it’s the kind of detail that sticks when you’re tracking which AI company is actually paying attention to developers. Linux users are not a casual audience. They’re often the engineers, security researchers, and open source contributors who end up influencing how tools get adopted across entire organizations. So when OpenAI launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux this week, it mattered, even if the timing was a little late.
The app is out now in preview, and it gives Linux users access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex directly from the desktop. No browser required. The release is worldwide as of Tuesday. OpenAI described Linux as “one of the most-requested platforms” for its desktop app, which raises the obvious question of why it took this long, but that’s a less interesting conversation than what the release actually supports.
The supported distributions include:
- Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS
- Debian 13
- Fedora 43 and 44
That list covers a lot of ground. Ubuntu and Debian in particular act as upstream bases for dozens of downstream distributions, so compatibility should extend to a wide range of popular “flavors” without OpenAI needing to test each one individually. Fedora support is notable too, given its close relationship with Red Hat and its popularity among developers who want a more current package ecosystem.
Anthropic’s Claude desktop app for Linux, released roughly a month earlier, supports Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later. So Claude actually has a slight edge on older Ubuntu versions. But OpenAI’s Fedora support is something Anthropic’s app currently lacks, and that difference matters to a specific, vocal slice of the Linux community.
The broader context here is that both companies are now clearly competing for developer mindshare on the desktop, not just in the browser or through API integrations. ChatGPT and Claude have similar web experiences. The desktop apps are where differentiation starts to happen, and where habits form. A developer who defaults to the ChatGPT desktop app when debugging code or drafting documentation is a different kind of user than someone who opens a browser tab occasionally.
Codex inclusion is worth highlighting specifically. OpenAI’s coding-focused model being bundled into the Linux app is a direct play for the developer workflow, and Linux is the dominant OS for that audience. If Codex performs well in day-to-day coding tasks on Linux, that’s a meaningful advantage. Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot are also competing for this space, though neither has a standalone Linux desktop app in the same form.
Still, OpenAI shipping a preview rather than a full release signals that rough edges probably exist. Linux desktop software is notoriously tricky to get right across distributions, and the preview label is likely doing some real work here. The real test is whether the app gets consistent updates and whether the distro support list grows to reflect how fragmented the Linux desktop actually is.
