OpenAI is now an ad company. Not fully, not yet, but the direction is clear. The company has announced it will begin testing a new visual ad format inside ChatGPT later this month, starting with the image generation feature. Free users in the US will see these ads first, displayed separately from whatever image they’re trying to create, clearly labeled and, according to OpenAI, completely walled off from influencing the model’s actual outputs.
OpenAI introduced its first ads earlier this year, showing text-based sponsored placements beneath ChatGPT’s responses. Logos, links, brand names. Functional, but not flashy. This new format goes further. Visual ads are designed to help users picture how a product or service fits into their lives, which is a polite way of saying OpenAI wants ads that actually convert, not just ads that technically exist.
The business logic here is straightforward. ChatGPT has hundreds of millions of users, a large chunk of whom are on the free tier. Subscription revenue from Plus and Pro plans is meaningful, but it has a ceiling. Advertising doesn’t. And notably, paid subscribers, both Plus and Pro, won’t see any of these ads. Enterprise customers are also excluded. So this is squarely aimed at monetizing the free user base, which is exactly the same playbook Google and Meta have run for years.
That comparison matters. OpenAI is entering a space where Google has spent two decades building advertiser relationships, auction infrastructure, and targeting systems. Microsoft, OpenAI’s biggest backer, has been running ads inside Bing’s AI features for some time. So OpenAI isn’t pioneering anything here. But it has something the others are still chasing: the most culturally prominent AI product on the market right now, with deep daily engagement from a broad user base.
There are real constraints baked into the current approach:
- Ads are limited to appropriate contexts, so sensitive topics like mental health or personal medical questions won’t trigger them
- Visual ads are launching with a select group of initial advertisers only
- The format is currently tied to image generation, not general chat
- Paid subscribers at every tier are shielded from ads entirely
OpenAI says it plans to test additional formats going forward. That’s the part worth watching. Image generation is a contained, low-stakes place to start. But if visual ads perform well, expect them to expand into other parts of the product. The question for developers and businesses evaluating ChatGPT is simple: how much does the ad layer change the experience, and where does it go next.
