Fifty-four million Americans bought something after watching a TikTok video. That number, from TikTok’s own Economic Impact Report, tells you everything about why the company just made its most aggressive commerce move yet. As reported by TechCrunch, TikTok has launched an AI Shopping Assistant alongside a one-click checkout feature that lets users buy directly from brands without ever leaving the For You feed.
The Shopping Assistant is a conversational AI agent built to help users find and buy products. It remembers preferences across a conversation, answers questions about sizing, shipping, and availability, and can walk a user through completing a purchase. That last part is new territory for TikTok. This isn’t a recommendation widget. It’s a full-session shopping companion that replaces the friction of bouncing between the app and a browser.
The one-click checkout is equally pointed. Instead of routing users to TikTok Shop or an external product page, purchases can now happen directly from the algorithmic video feed. That’s a structural change in how TikTok thinks about its role in the buying process. The For You feed has always been good at creating desire. Now it’s also where you act on it.
The commerce infrastructure behind this is worth noting. TikTok built these features in partnership with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe, among others. That’s a real stack, not a prototype. It signals that TikTok is positioning itself as a serious commerce layer, not just a traffic source for other platforms.
There’s also a clear competitive angle here. By keeping product questions inside the app, TikTok is directly competing with ChatGPT and other AI tools that users currently switch to when they want buying advice. If the assistant is good enough, there’s no reason to leave. That’s the bet.
The broader context matters too. TikTok Shop launched in the U.S. in September 2023 and generated an estimated $15.8 billion in U.S. sales in 2025, roughly 18% of all U.S. social commerce, according to eMarketer. But TikTok Shop is a destination. These new features are about turning the entire app into a shopping surface. That’s a different ambition, and a bigger one.
For brands and developers building on Shopify or Salesforce, this is worth watching closely. Distribution is shifting. The checkout is no longer the end of a funnel, it’s embedded in the content itself. And TikTok, with 54 million proven buyers, has the audience to make that stick.
