OpenAI’s infrastructure is buckling under its own hype. According to TechCrunch, the company has paused new signups for its $200-per-month Pro plan after demand for Astra, its newest and most capable model, put too much strain on its systems. That’s a striking admission for a company that has raised over $40 billion and spent years building out compute infrastructure at scale.
The call was made public by Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s product lead for ChatGPT and Codex, who posted about it on X. His reasoning was straightforward: Pro users consume the most resources, so cutting off new Pro signups is the smallest move that still lets OpenAI keep serving its existing base. The API, Go, and Plus plans remain open. Only the top tier is frozen.
This wasn’t entirely a surprise. Sottiaux had flagged the possibility two days earlier, writing that Astra demand was unlike anything he had seen, even accounting for the steep growth OpenAI went through in earlier periods. That’s a meaningful comparison. ChatGPT’s launch in late 2022 broke records for consumer adoption. If Astra is putting more pressure on the system than that did, the numbers are significant.
Astra launched on September 3 and has been rolling out across Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business accounts. OpenAI positioned it as a major step forward in reasoning, coding, and computer use, which are exactly the areas where competitors like Anthropic with Claude, Google with Gemini, and a growing list of open-source models are fighting hardest. OpenAI also framed Astra as the start of the “AGI era,” which is a bold claim that predictably drove a spike in interest and signups.
The timing of the infrastructure crunch is worth paying attention to. OpenAI raised usage limits for Codex users just last month, which suggests the system was already being pushed before Astra arrived. Adding a model with this much marketing weight behind it clearly tipped things over.
For developers and teams evaluating AI platforms, this matters for a few reasons:
- Pro plan access is uncertain for new customers, with no timeline given for when signups reopen
- Existing Pro users are being prioritized, but service quality under heavy load is still an open question
- Alternatives like Anthropic’s Claude Pro or Google’s Gemini Advanced remain fully available
- OpenAI’s API access is unaffected, so developer workflows tied to the API are not at risk
Still, pausing a flagship subscription tier is not a good look for a company competing for enterprise contracts that require reliability guarantees. OpenAI has not disclosed daily signup volumes or given a reopening date, which makes planning difficult for anyone who was evaluating the Pro tier right now. Watch how long this lasts. If it stretches beyond a week or two, that tells you something about how hard Astra is actually hitting their systems.
