Rivian launches AI voice assistant ahead of schedule

Rivian’s AI voice assistant is here earlier than expected. The electric vehicle startup announced on Tuesday that its Rivian Assistant is rolling out now via an over-the-air software update. This comes ahead of the company’s original timeline, which had the feature launching in early 2026.

The AI-powered assistant is available immediately for all R1S and R1T owners with active connectivity subscriptions. The R2 will get the feature when it launches in the coming weeks.

This announcement reflects the broader race among automakers to integrate advanced AI into their vehicles. While Tesla has xAI’s Grok and General Motors, Volvo, and Polestar have announced access to Google Gemini, Rivian is positioning its solution as more deeply integrated into the vehicle’s core systems.

The Rivian Assistant goes beyond typical voice commands that require specific phrasing. Users can activate it by saying “Hey Rivian” or pressing a steering wheel button to handle complex requests. The system can adjust drive modes, access vehicle cameras, and provide information about points of interest.

What makes it interesting is its ability to handle multi-step commands and remember context from previous conversations. For example, you can ask it to send restaurant recommendations to a friend while sharing your estimated arrival time from the navigation system. It can also answer general knowledge questions similar to ChatGPT.

Rivian also calls the assistant “an encyclopedia for your vehicle.” Instead of searching through owner’s manuals, drivers can ask questions like how to change a tire and get instant answers.

The system’s “agentic capability” is where it gets more advanced. Rivian plans to connect various third-party services over time, starting with Google Calendar. This means owners can:

  • Move meetings using voice commands
  • Navigate to appointments automatically
  • Send calendar information via text
  • Access schedule details while driving

This level of integration puts Rivian in direct competition with established tech companies’ automotive AI efforts. The company says it uses both in-house and external AI models to power different functions, giving it flexibility in how the assistant operates.

The timing is significant for Rivian, which has been working to differentiate its vehicles in an increasingly crowded electric truck and SUV market. An advanced AI assistant could become a key selling point, especially if it works as smoothly as the company promises.

For now, the feature requires an active connectivity subscription, which means ongoing costs for owners. How well the assistant performs in real-world conditions will likely determine whether it becomes a genuine advantage or just another dashboard feature.
