Giving up your cursor to an AI agent is, frankly, a terrible user experience. Anthropic seems to agree. The company has announced that Claude Code now supports background computer use on macOS, meaning the model can click, type, and open applications on your machine without taking over your screen while you work.
The feature is available to Pro and Max subscribers and works across both Claude Code and Claude Cowork. On a practical level, this means you can hand Claude a task, such as running tests, filling out a form, or navigating a web-based tool, and it will handle it in a separate context while you stay focused on whatever you were doing. No interruption, no frozen cursor, no waiting your turn to use your own computer.
This matters because computer use as a category has had an adoption problem. The concept is compelling on paper: an AI that operates software the way a human would, without requiring API access or custom integrations. But the early implementations were clunky. Watching an agent slowly move your mouse across the screen while you sit idle defeats the purpose. Background execution is what makes the feature actually usable in a real workflow.
Anthropic is not first here. OpenAI rolled out background computer use on Mac earlier this year through its Codex-connected tooling inside ChatGPT. So this is Anthropic catching up on a capability that matters for developer productivity, not setting a new direction. Still, Claude Code has been building real momentum among developers who prefer its reasoning style and context handling, and adding this feature keeps it competitive with what OpenAI is offering in that space. Cursor and other AI coding environments are also pushing in this direction, so the pressure across the board is real.
The bigger picture here is that agentic AI on the desktop is moving from demo to daily driver. Background computer use is a step toward AI that operates more like a junior colleague handling tasks in parallel, rather than a tool you invoke one command at a time. That shift has real implications for how developers and technical teams structure their work.
