Anthropic just made its clearest push yet into productivity software, and it’s aimed squarely at teams already living inside Google Workspace. As announced on the Anthropic site, Claude for Google Workspace is now in public beta across all paid Claude plans. The add-on puts Claude in a sidebar next to your open file. No tab switching, no copy-pasting between tools.
What Claude actually does inside each app
The behavior is different across Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and that specificity matters. In Docs, Claude reads the file, sees your selection, and can edit in place without disturbing surrounding formatting. For larger changes, it surfaces suggestion cards in the sidebar, each one pointing to the exact passage it wants to modify. You approve or dismiss each one. So if you want to tighten an executive summary and convert the next steps section into a table, Claude does both in the same document, in one pass.
Sheets support is more technical. Claude can write formulas, build pivot tables, generate native charts, and add tabs. For joins or data cleaning, it can pull a range into Python and write results back into the sheet. That last part, running Python against spreadsheet data, is something Google’s own Gemini integration in Sheets has been building toward. Claude is doing it too, and in beta.
In Slides, Claude builds new slides using your deck’s existing layouts and themes. It also checks its own output and flags elements that overlap, run off the edge, or have text that’s hard to read. That self-review step is a small but practical detail.
Two modes, one useful distinction
Claude has two operating modes in the add-on. “Ask before edits” shows each change as an approval card before anything touches the file. “Accept all edits” lets Claude work through the task and apply everything without stopping. For anyone anxious about AI making changes to a live document, the default mode addresses that directly.
Enterprise controls and connectors carry over
This is where the product gets more interesting for larger teams. When signed in with a Claude account, the sidebar brings along any connectors and skills already configured. That means Claude can pull Salesforce account data into a Slides deck, or reference Google Drive files when drafting a report. Enterprise controls like the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys, and OpenTelemetry audit export all apply to the add-on as well.
- Google Docs: in-place edits, suggestion cards, formatting-safe rewrites
- Google Sheets: formula writing, pivot tables, Python-based data cleaning, chart generation
- Google Slides: theme-matched slide creation, layout error checking
- Cross-app: connectors to Salesforce, Google Drive, and others; saved skill templates
Why this matters beyond the feature list
Microsoft 365 Copilot has been in this space for over a year. Google’s own Gemini is baked into Workspace natively. Anthropic is entering a market with two well-funded incumbents, but it’s betting that Claude’s instruction-following and document reasoning are strong enough to compete at the task level. That’s a reasonable bet, based on Claude’s benchmark performance in long-context and editing tasks. But the real test is whether Workspace users, who already have Gemini one click away, switch to a sidebar add-on from a third party.
Still, for teams already paying for Claude Enterprise, this removes a real friction point. The install is straightforward: Google Workspace Marketplace, then Extensions, Claude, Open Claude. Admins can push it across a domain from the Google Admin console. The Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors, which let Claude create and edit files from the chat interface directly, can be enabled separately for Team and Enterprise plans.
