Samsung is making a big bet on AI-powered health coaching. The company announced a major update to the Samsung Health app that transforms the Galaxy Watch from a passive tracker into an active wellness coach. The update starts rolling out June 8 and will showcase key features coming to the next Galaxy Watch.
This shift from simple data collection to smart health guidance reflects the broader trend in wearable technology. Companies are moving beyond step counting and heart rate monitoring to provide meaningful insights that actually help users improve their health. Samsung’s approach puts AI analysis at the center, turning complex biometric data into simple daily recommendations.
The timing is significant as the wearable health market becomes increasingly competitive. Apple continues to dominate with health-focused Apple Watch features, while newer players like Oura focus on recovery and sleep insights. Samsung’s AI-powered approach could help differentiate its Galaxy Watch lineup in a crowded market where hardware specs are becoming similar across brands.
“Samsung Health is evolving to connect health data measured by Galaxy Watch with AI-based insights, enabling users to understand their physical and mental condition more easily and intuitively,” said Hon Pak, Senior Vice President and Head of the Digital Health Team at Samsung Electronics.
The update includes four major new health features that work together to provide comprehensive wellness coaching:
- Vitals analyzes five overnight bio-signals including heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen against personal baselines. It only sends alerts for meaningful deviations, helping users know when they might be getting sick without constant notifications.
- Heart Health Score combines sleep, stress, activity and body composition data into one daily metric that shows which habits impact long-term cardiovascular health.
- Daily Cardio Load measures cardiovascular strain during exercise and recommends optimal training intensity and recovery periods to prevent burnout.
- Fitness Index compares personal metrics like VO2 max against peer groups to identify strengths and weaknesses, then suggests personalized goals.
Samsung also redesigned the Health app interface around five core areas: Sleep, Activity, Nutrition, Mindfulness and Vitals. The new home screen centralizes daily wellness tips with the AI-powered Energy Score, making it easier to see how different health factors connect.
Several existing features got significant upgrades too. The Antioxidant Index now includes trend charts and daily logs that visually connect diet choices to physical responses over time. A new AGEs index runs automatic overnight measurements to track how lifestyle choices accumulate in the body long-term.
The update also introduces Hearing Health monitoring across Samsung’s device ecosystem. The Galaxy Watch tracks ambient noise levels and provides personalized analytics to protect users’ ears during loud commutes or workouts.
These AI-powered health features represent Samsung’s vision for connected wellness across its entire Galaxy ecosystem. The company is positioning this as just the beginning, with the full experience coming to its next-generation Galaxy Watch lineup.
The health features are designed for wellness tracking only and aren’t intended for medical diagnosis or treatment. They require Android 10 or above with Samsung Health app version 7.0 or higher. Some features need time and user data to provide personalized results.
