Google Home is getting more personal with a new update that lets smart cameras remember and identify your pets by name. The feature, called Pet Memory, uses Gemini AI to transform generic alerts like ‘a dog is walking in your kitchen’ into personalized notifications like ‘Fido is walking in the kitchen.’

The update also expands Google’s Ask Home feature to more regions, bringing the voice-activated Gemini assistant to additional markets worldwide. This represents Google’s broader push to make smart home systems more intuitive and context-aware.

Pet Memory works by letting users tell Gemini their pet’s name and description through Ask Home. The AI then uses this information for future camera notifications and when responding to voice questions about home activity. The feature is available for indoor Nest cameras and select Gemini-enabled cameras, though it requires Google Home Premium Advanced plan subscription.

This update matters because it addresses one of the most common smart camera use cases – monitoring pets while away from home. Instead of parsing through generic animal detection alerts, pet owners get specific notifications about their individual animals. This reduces false alarms and makes home monitoring more useful for families with multiple pets or specific behavioral concerns.

The Ask Home expansion is equally significant. Voice access to Gemini for Home is now available in all supported markets, which includes:

  • Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France
  • Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand
  • Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and US

Germany joins the list for the first time with early access support for Gemini for Home voice assistant. This includes German language support across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland – a major expansion for Google’s AI-powered smart home features in German-speaking markets.

The timing aligns with the broader smart home industry’s shift toward AI-powered personalization. Companies like Amazon and Apple are also integrating more sophisticated AI into their home ecosystems. Google’s approach differs by focusing on contextual understanding rather than just command processing.

These updates are rolling out now for early access users, though Google hasn’t specified when general availability will begin. The Pet Memory feature’s requirement for the Advanced plan subscription signals Google’s strategy to monetize premium AI features in smart home products.
