Google is pushing ahead with its plan to replace Google Assistant across all device categories. The company has launched Gemini Go, a streamlined version of its Gemini AI assistant designed specifically for Android Go devices with entry-level specifications.
The new assistant targets Android Go devices with 2GB of RAM or more. Users can access Gemini Go by long-pressing the Home button or Power key, offering an alternative to the now-deprecated Assistant Go.
This move fits into Google’s broader strategy to phase out Google Assistant in favor of Gemini across its ecosystem. The company has been gradually replacing Assistant with Gemini on various platforms, signaling a major shift in how Google approaches AI-powered voice assistants. Android Go devices, which primarily serve emerging markets and budget-conscious consumers, represent a significant user base that Google can’t afford to leave behind in this transition.
Gemini Go includes several key capabilities designed for everyday use:
- Communication: Make calls and send text messages to contacts through voice commands
- Local search: Get driving directions and complex location queries like finding restaurants with specific criteria
- Productivity: Set alarms and create calendar events
- File handling: Upload documents, photos, and other files to provide context for conversations
- Media playback: Request music by mood or activity with natural language commands
Google emphasizes that Gemini Go offers a more conversational experience compared to its predecessor, though the company hasn’t shared screenshots or detailed demonstrations of the interface.
On Android Go devices, Gemini Go is integrated into the Google Search app rather than operating as a standalone application. The assistant is rolling out gradually as an update to Google Go, joining other streamlined apps like Gmail Go and Maps Go in Google’s suite of lightweight applications for budget devices.
This launch is particularly important for maintaining Google’s AI assistant presence in price-sensitive markets. Android Go devices often serve as the primary smartphone for users in developing regions, where Google faces increasing competition from local tech companies and alternative AI assistants. By bringing Gemini’s capabilities to these devices, Google ensures its latest AI technology reaches users across different economic segments.
