Meta just bought a company whose product runs on its competitors’ models. That’s the part worth noticing about Conductor. The startup lets developers spin up software projects by deploying multiple coding agents into parallel workspaces, and the agents themselves come from Anthropic and OpenAI.
The deal was first reported by Axios, and Meta confirmed the acquisition to TechCrunch without sharing terms or any other details. Founder and CEO Charlie Holtz wrote on Wednesday that Conductor is joining Meta, and teased “big, crazy plans for the next interface” with “something new” due by early next year.
Conductor is young. It was founded in 2024 and launched its core product only last summer. Its agent teams can run in the cloud, locally, or from a phone, and they let engineers work on separate parts of a project at the same time. So the value isn’t a model. It’s orchestration: how you manage five agents without them stepping on each other.
That matters because the coding-agent market is crowded and fast. Cursor, Anthropic’s Claude Code, OpenAI’s Codex, and Cognition’s Devin all compete for developer attention, and several are moving toward multi-agent workflows. The model layer is getting commoditized. The interface layer, where a developer actually directs the work, is where differentiation is being fought over. Meta seems to agree.
It also fits Meta’s pattern. The company lagged in AI services and has spent months catching up. It launched its own coding agent, Muse Code, in August. Its Muse agents have reportedly passed 10 million users. And it has made several AI acquisitions in the past year, including the viral agent platform Moltbook. Conductor looks more like a talent and product-design pickup than a technology purchase. Holtz said he’s excited to work with Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, head of product at Superintelligence Labs.
For current users, the practical details are simple. Core features will keep working as they do now until early next year. The exception is the cloud service, which shuts down on November 20, after which Conductor will start deleting user cloud data. If you rely on it, export what you need now.
The open question is what happens to those Anthropic and OpenAI integrations. Meta has its own models and its own coding agent, and it would be natural to steer Conductor toward them. Will the next interface stay model-agnostic? I’d bet not for long. Developers who like Conductor because it works with Claude and Codex should treat that as an open question, and keep an eye on whatever ships in the new year.
